Entry from: Istanbul, Turkey Entry Title: "A foray to the Asian side" Entry: "I woke up to another beautiful and sunny morning in Istanbul. The streets outside were already abuzz with activity. The tourists have come out and begun their day, some boarding an idling tour bus, while others dragging their luggage over the cobblestoned pavement. Even the feral cats have come out to frolic on the sidewalk, basking in the sun in a quiet corner, or just darting under parked cars. For some unknown reason, there is an inordinately large number of cats in Istanbul. There is no telling if they are being provided by people as pets, but judging from the population size, there is no effort to control their reproduction. As for dogs, one would be hard pressed to see people walking their dogs, much less a stray dog. I believe this is a cultural bias based on the Islamic tradition, which generally regard dogs as a dirty animal, whereas cats are given much leeway. I walked a few paces to the small restaurant in the corner, sat down on their outdoor terrace and ordered a cup of Turkish coffee. It comes in a small cup, much like an espresso cup, but the coffee ground is not filtered, and when you get to close to finishing it, the coffee ground would inevitably flow through your lips.
